My favorite space in our apartment is the bar counter I built at the windows facing the park. As soon as I walk in the front door, everything leaves my head. We also have a 3,500-square-foot house in upstate New York on a lake. Today, my wife, Joyce, and I live with our 10-year-old daughter, Thea, on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, a block from Central Park. In 1999, I started my own company and designed clothes for men with an edgy, tailored look that had an authentic rock ‘n’ roll feel. I started the CK brand as well as their underwear division, where I created the boxer brief. In the late 1980s, I worked for Calvin Klein as head of menswear design. There, I improved my drawing and pattern skills, and began designing clothes. When I took over Ralph Lauren’s sales and merchandising in New York, I took classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

I opened a men’s store in a luxury mall with some business partners, and we were among the first to carry PoloĮxecutives at Ralph Lauren loved what we did, and in 1983 they hired me to head up their Chicago region. In their Grand Rapids store, I watched the tailor and learned the basics of making clothes. Throughout college I worked at Hughes & Hatcher. I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. But after three years, I transferred to the University of Michigan and majored in education.

My look was eclectic but with a rocker’s perspective. These stores had new and used items, including bell-bottom jeans, leather jackets and jeans shirts. I bought clothes at Hughes and at a few cool stores in the local mall. We played school gigs.Īt 16, I started selling menswear in Detroit at Hughes & Hatcher, a Michigan clothing chain. I was in a band with my cousins called Sweet Wine. When I was in high school, I hocked a jacket to buy an electric Valco Airline guitar. In addition to Motown, we had powerful hard-rock and shock-rock bands, including Alice Cooper, Iggy and the Stooges, the MC5, and Bob Seger, among others. In high school, I was known for wearing the type of thin scarves favored by Keith Richards.ĭetroit was a huge music center in the 1960s and early ’70s. Soon, those photos had an impact on my style. Little by little, I began to pay more attention to what artists were wearing in photos. Back then, if you were interested in rock bands, you had to turn to music magazines. I spent a lot of time at Sam’s Jams record store near our home. Starting at age 10, I began to feel the smallness of where we lived. After church on Sundays at 2 p.m., we had a big dinner at our house or the house of a relative. Their parents had come over from Thessaloniki and Sparta in Greece. They grew up as first-generation Americans.
